On the 21st February 2024, we launched a series of bilingual education pamphlets at the International Mother Language Day celebration in East London. International Mother Language Day is a UNESCO initiative which seeks to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. The Department of Basic Education used this opportunity to launch Mother Tongue Based Bilingual Education to be rolled out starting in Grade 4 in 2025. Halala! All delegates at the event received a printed copy of the pamphlet in either Sesotho or IsiXhosa and English.

Bua-lit in collaboration with the Zenex Foundation has designed and produced a series of 3 pamphlets with information about bi/multilingual education for the South African public. The first pamphlet, covering the topic “What is bi/multilingual education?”, is currently available in three languages. The pamphlets will soon be available in all the official languages of South Africa.

The advocacy work using the pamphlets has begun.
