In the above video, Xolisa and Carolyn talk about our beliefs surrounding language. 

English teacher, Khayelitsha:

It’s the way that our mindset has been set up, that everything that is superior and that is pure must be done in English. That is the concept that our parents have.

Nosisa Beyile: Xhosa 1st Language Examiner, WCED: 

We want to speak English, because we want white people to understand us. But I think it should be a two-way [street]: they should also understand us. If we learn to speak their English, they must also learn to speak our Xhosa. 

Sifuna ukuthetha isiNgesi kuba sifuna abantu abamhlophe basiqonde kodwa ndicinga ukuba oku kufanele ukwenzeka macala: Kufuneka nabo basiqonde. Ukuba sifunda ukuthetha ulwimi lwabo isiNgesi, nabo kufuneka bafunde ukuthetha olwethu olu sisiXhosa.

Nosisa draws our attention to the equality of languages.

The exciting development is that African language speaking children will no longer have to suffer these feelings of inferiority, stupidity and boredom. They will no longer have to learn everything through English from Grade 4.
