Now that you’ve watched the film, we would like you to read some of the children’s comments about the Science experiment at Bishops Primary School.

Boy 1: It was quite unfair, because I would try really hard to understand the question, and when I understood it, I couldn’t answer it. It just felt like I was stupid, when I knew all the correct things; I just couldn’t say them.

Boy 2: If the teacher asked me a question in Xhosa, I would take about 5 minutes to understand the question. By then there would be another question. 

Ubethi utitshalakazi akundibuza umbuzo ngesiXhosa, kundithathe kangangemizuzu emihlanu ukuwuqonda. Ngelo xesha, ndiqala ukuwuqonda kube sele kukho onye umbuzo olandelayo.

Boy 3: It would be so hard to write exams in Xhosa. I would probably leave the country and go to another country where you can write in the same language.

Kungazima kakhulu ukuba ndibhale iimviwo zam ngesiXhosa. Ndicinga ukuba ndingalishiya eli lizwe, ndiye kwelinye apho ndinokukwazi ukubhala ngolwimi endiluthethayo.

Boy 4: If I had to write my exams in another language that I didn’t understand, I might be able to get a few marks, but I wouldn’t get enough to pass.

Ukuba bekunyanzelekile ukuba ndibhale iimviwo zam ngolunye ulwimi endingaluqondiyo, bendinokufumana  amanqakwana ambalwa, kodwa angenakwanela ukuze ndiphumelele.

Boy 5: I couldn’t understand the question, let alone answer it, because I’m not very good at Xhosa. If I had to write exams I wouldn’t bother going to school.

Bendingawuqondi kwaphela umbuzo, andithethi ke ngokuwuphendula, kuba andisazi kakuhle isiXhoseni. Ukuba bendinokubhala iimviwo zam ngaso, bendingazi  kuzikhathaza ngokuya esikolweni.

Boy 6: Close to the end I got a bit bored. I didn’t even bother to try, because I couldn’t understand what the teacher was saying. It just makes me feel quite sad for people who have to do it every day.
