This course has been developed by the bua-lit language and literacy collective, in support of the Department of Basic Education (DBE), endorsed by the DBE and funded by the Zenex Foundation.

What will you learn?

This course explores Mother Tongue-Based Bilingual Education (MTBBE) in South Africa, emphasizing its role in academic and cognitive development. Educators will be introduced to key principles, practical strategies for integrating home languages and English, and tools to support a smooth transition to bilingual learning from Grade 4 onwards.

How long is the course?

The course should take you 2-3 hours to complete. From when you begin you have 4 weeks to complete it. After successful completion you will get a certificate.

How are we using languages in this course?

This course is primarily in English but integrates African languages. IsiXhosa is used more because the presenters are based in the Western Cape. All content is also explained in English. We encourage participants to use all their languages for thinking, speaking, writing, and learning.
